Mirna Sadasy Interview Transcript:
NATASHA: Hello, I am Natasha Fearon and I'm here with Mirna Sadasy at the Park Slope Old Timers Reunion at 4th Street and 6th Avenue on Saturday, August 9th, 2025. Can you please spell your name? Can you please spell your name?
MIRNA: M-I-R-N-A Mirna Sadasy, S-A-D-A-S-Y.
NATASHA: What is your relationship to Park Slope or to Brooklyn?
MIRNA: I grew up in Park Slope right on 4th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. I came here in 1965 and I lived here until 1986 and that's when I moved to Canarsie. But I've been here a long time.
NATASHA: Do you have any particular powerful or important memory of Park Slope or Brooklyn you'd like to share?
MIRNA: You know what? We always used to have block parties on our block and everybody used to come and that was like the best ever because it was just like this. It was music, it was food, free food at the time. But it was everybody participated. We had bikes going up and down to shut the blocks down. And then we also have field trips as well. Yeah, so we used to go up to Hessian State Park. We used to go to Ma–uh, I was gonna say Magic Mountain–Bear Mountain, all kinds of different parks all over. And that was great too. That was fun. Every year.
NATASHA: Why did you decide to come to the Park Slope Old Timers Reunion today?
MIRNA: First of all, I'm kind of related to John, that's number one. But, I always wanted to see... I'm not a Facebook or social media type of person, so this is my Facebook, this is my social media. I get to see the people that I haven't seen in a long, long time. I get to see them, some of them just once a year, most of them. I mean, I come up to New York, I live in Tampa now, but I come up to New York every few– my family still lives here in Brooklyn. My brother still lives up the block, so I visit quite frequently here.
NATASHA: What are some things you think more people should know about Park Slope or Brooklyn based on your experience?
MIRNA: It's always been diversified. I never felt any kind of prejudice or racism. I personally didn't feel it. But it was always fun to grow up here. I still feel an attachment to it. I look at all the stores that were here and are not here now. Just, I don't know what else to say.
NATASHA: What are your hopes for the future of the neighborhood and Brooklyn?
MIRNA: I just hope it stays the way it is. It's always nice community. The sense of family, the sense of togetherness. That's what I hope, that it stays peaceful.
